Disability in the Academy: A Panel Discussion & Luncheon

Noon – 2 p.m   Charles E. Young Grand Salon, Kerckhoff Hall

This annual faculty luncheon and panel discussion addresses issues such as the legal and practical aspects of accommodating visible and invisible disabilities in the classroom.  The panel includes Amy Blum, Campus Counsel;  Liz Gong-Guy, Director, Counseling and Psychological Services; Kathy Molini, Director, Office for Students with Disabilities; Adrienne Malka, Manager, Employee Management Services and Stuart Biegel, Ph.D., Graduate School of Education and the School of Law.

Alternate Your Abilities & Pathway Art Exhibit

6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m   John Wooden Center, Events Lobby

Beginning and Experienced Adaptive Cycling

Join us for a bike ride and see the campus from a different perspective on a tandem or a hand cycle.  This program is designed for those with mobility impairments as well as for others that would like to experience the activity of hand cycling and tandem cycling. Murder Ball: A Film which features the 2004 USA Men’s Paralympic Quad Rugby Team followed by a Discussion

7:00 – 9:30 p.m  DeNeve Auditorium

This film was the winner of the Documentary Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize for Editing at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.  The film features men who have arrived through very different journeys to find themselves competing in their own full-contact sport of Quad Rugby.  Preparing for the 2004 Athens Games, this film will “smash every stereotype you ever had about “gimps” and “cripples.” It is a film about family, revenge, honor, and the triumph of love over loss. Brief History of Sign Language in America and Signing to Music

Wheelchair Basketball Exhibition & Clinic

Come see the Fast Breakin’ Lakers Wheelchair Basketball team in an exhibition game as well as get into a chair and learn about wheelchair basketball and shoot a few hoops.  This program is designed for those with mobility impairments as well as for others that would like to experience wheelchair basketball.

UCLA Recreation Adaptive Programs Volunteer Information Session

“Progress in research and treatment for childhood motor disorders: cerebral palsy and Duchenne muscular dystrophy”

The UCLA/Orthopedic Hospital Center for Cerebral Palsy and the UCLA Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research group present an overview of treatment and research.  Presentations include:

  • “Advances in treatment for cerebral palsy” –  William Oppenheim, MD, Head of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
  • “Biomechanical and neuromuscular mechanisms affecting movement in cerebral palsy” – Eileen Fowler, PhD, PT, Associate Professor in Orthopedics and Faculty, Tarjan Center at UCLA
  • “Research advances in Duchenne muscular dystrophy” - Melissa Spencer, PhD, Associate Profesor in Neurology and Carrie Miceli, PhD, Professor in the Department of Microbiology Immunology and Molecular Genetics

UCLA Recreation Adaptive Advanced Hand Cycling & Tandem Cycling

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m  UCLA Marine Aquatic Center, Marina del Rey

UCLA Recreation Adaptive Sailing Excursion

1:00 – 3:00 p.m  UCLA Marine Aquatic Center, Marina del Rey
